What each field tells you

Every lookup runs against the same geolocation database that powers IP Location Block, so what you see here is what the plugin sees when it decides whether to allow or block a request.

  • Country and country code: the country the address is registered to, plus its two letter ISO code. This is the field country rules match on, and it is the most reliable one.
  • Region or state: the administrative area inside that country, for example a state, province or county. Regional rules use this level.
  • City: the closest city the address maps to. Useful context, though it is an estimate rather than a street address.
  • Latitude and longitude: the approximate center of that city or region, not the visitor's exact position. Two addresses in the same city usually share the same coordinates.
  • Timezone: the local time offset for that location, handy when you are reading server logs recorded in UTC.
  • ASN and network owner: the autonomous system number and the organization that operates the network. This is what tells a home broadband connection apart from a hosting provider, a cloud region or a mobile carrier, which is often the strongest signal that traffic is automated.

How accurate is the data?

Country level results are correct for the large majority of addresses, and the databases behind them are refreshed regularly so reassigned ranges do not go stale. City and coordinate accuracy is looser by nature: a VPN, a proxy, a corporate network or a mobile carrier can place a visitor hundreds of kilometers from where they actually are, and some addresses only resolve as far as their country. Treat the country and the network owner as decision grade, and the city and coordinates as helpful context.

Put this data to work on your site

IP Location Block runs the same lookup on every request and blocks the visitors you do not want. The free API plan includes 10,000 geolocation requests a month.
